The worst thing bettors can do with bonus bets is take them for granted. There are no risks to using a bonus bet, as if your bet loses you are not losing any money. But bonus bets are an opportunity, and one that should not be squandered.
You should weigh the risks, factoring in that the stake is not included in the potential returns. Ideally, these should not be placed on bets with astronomically long odds, nor on wagers that have extremely short odds and return mere cents on each dollar. Bonus Bet Conditions
Another important aspect of bonus bets are the conditions that they are offered with. These terms pretty much shape how you can use your bonus bets, defining what you can and cannot use the bonus bets for:
- Minimum odds requirements
- Eligible markets
- Game/league-tied bonuses
- Maximum win caps/limits
Then, there are conditions relating to how you can apply the tokens when staking bets. For instance, they may be single tokens that cannot be used as a partial stake – you get a $10 bonus bet and you have to place a bet with a $10 stake. Other bonus bets may allow you to combine real money with the bonus bet, so you place a $20 bet and stake $10 of it with real money, and $10 with the bonus bet. Again, the bonus stake will not be included in any returns.
These are all important to check out, and the exact conditions vary from one bonus to the next. Just because you get 2 bonus bets at DraftKings, it doesn’t mean both follow exactly the same criteria, so check the rules for each.
By State
Bonus bets can have state restrictions, which is why you should always check the sportsbook offer for yourself. This goes for all bonuses, from the welcome offer to any reload or seasonal promotions. For instance, a welcome offer may be slightly different in a specific state.
From a legal perspective, the promotions may differ because the state has laws restricting specific types of offers, such as a no deposit bonus, or a win/loss condition for bonus bets. It can also depend on the market that the sportsbook wants to target in a state. Expiration Rules
There are two expiration timeframes that you should be aware of. One is the expiration date for claiming your bonus bet – this is the time period where you have to complete a qualifying action to redeem the bonus bet. The second is the time the bonus bet remains valid for, after which the sportsbook takes back the offer.
For Qualifying Actions
Expiration dates for claiming the bonus can be a week, a few days, or be tied to the start of a sports game. For example, with welcome bonuses you usually have around 1 week to claim your bonus bets after you sign up. That means, 1 week to make a qualifying deposit, and potentially a wager too – which must settle within the week for you to get your bonus bets. A bonus bet that is tied to an event, such as the next Super Bowl game, will only be valid up until the game starts. You have until then to complete any qualifying actions to get your bonus bet.
For the Bonuses
The bonus validity timeframe starts from the moment you claim your bonus bets. It can be a week, days, or tied to a specific event. The idea is that you should use this bonus and it should settle before the time period expires. The winnings you make from bonus bets can have playthrough requirements, but this is not common practise at US sportsbooks.
We have seen it more at offshore books or blacklisted sites. Requirements like 10x mean you would need to roll over any returns won through bonus bets that many times to be able to cash out any money.
Again, this is not common practise at US sportsbooks. Instead, the money you win is yours to claim. Expiration dates generally apply to the timeframe in which you have to use your bonus bet, and the bet should settle.
